As reflexology gains popularity and awareness, let’s take a moment to clear up a few things you may have heard. I’d love to know which ones were new info to you, reply back and let me know!
1. Reflexology Myth: it’s just a foot massage
There’s nothing wrong with a foot massage. While both can feel wonderfully relaxing and refreshing and even FEEL similar, they are not the same. Massage focuses more on the muscles and tissues in the body (along with tendons, ligaments, etc.) while reflexology focuses on using specific points mapped out on the foot (as well as on the hands, face, and ears) representing the whole body and working on the nervous system (there are over 7,000 nerve endings in each foot).
2. Reflexology Myth: it’s just for the feet
As hinted above, there are maps representing the whole body not only on the feet, but also on the hands, ears, and face. Each of these areas have specific points that reflexologists work on to promote relaxation and healing in the whole body. I personally have trained and offer reflexology services on the [insert what you do].
A related misconception is that reflexology only helps the feet since a foot reflexology session only touches the feet. In reality, the benefits people report are related to all parts of the body.
3. Reflexology Myth: it’s only for people [blank ____] years old / or certain groups of people
Reflexology has been shown to be beneficial for people (and even animals) of all ages from newborns to those in hospice as well as those of varying levels of health. Some people seek out reflexology to help with certain health issues, while others choose it as preventative care to help them stay healthy. While I tend to see people who are experience high stress/anxiety, other reflexologists have chosen to specialize in areas such as fertility, special needs kids, hospice patients, stroke patients, and everyone in between.
4. Reflexology Myth: it’s a special treat or way to pamper myself
While a reflexology session can feel like a luxurious way to pamper yourself (and some do use it that way), reflexology is so much more, especially when it’s done regularly such as once a month, or more frequently. The benefits are many and like many things, they only increase the more we use them. Think of it like exercising or stretching the muscles. The benefits compound as the body gets used to it and responds accordingly.
5. Reflexology Myth: it’s only good for stress relief
The benefits of reducing stress and getting your body out of fight-or-flight mode and into the healing state (parasympathetic) alone are numerous, so even if reflexology is “only” good for stress relief, that translates to a huge list of positive things happening in your body.
6. Reflexology Myth: it can heal diseases
Reflexology isn’t a drug or a solution to a specific health issue, it’s more powerful than that limitation. Reflexology helps the body return to its healing state and homeostasis so the body can heal itself as it was designed to do. But reflexology is not what heals
you, only you and your body can do that.
